Francis Parker Library

Books Change Lives 2008

Background:

The library display came about as a collaboration between a remarkable Parker parent, Mr. Chuck Philyaw and Carol Brown, Head Librarian. Mr. Philyaw mentioned to Mrs. Brown in the Fall of 2007 that he had stumbled upon an exciting new book called You've Got to Read This Book by Jack Canfield. The premise of this book is that one book can have a transformational impact on a person's life. Mr. Philyaw was particularly moved by this idea and graciously volunteered to fund a display in the library that could become a permanent collection on this theme.

As the project grew, the library staff collected books on the joy of reading and the importance of books. It became evident that no particular list of books is the abosolute right list of books for every individual. Any one person at any one time in their life may stumble upon "a certain book" that can transform their life. Mrs. Brown decided to ask faculty members if they had discovered such a book in their lives. She shouldn't have been surprised, given the remarkable faculty at Francis Parker, that books had influenced many on the faculty. She was deeply moved however, by the thoughtful and profound comments she received from her colleagues.

Hence, the display in April of 2008 developed. We hope this will be the start of an annual celebration of the power of the written word to influence and transform lives.
